Professional Practice

Metabolic dietitians, involved in the care of children and adults with inborn errors of metabolism must rely on a wide range of up-to-date resources to provide the best possible care to patients. GMDI is dedicated to compiling, evaluating and developing resources to serve as appropriate tools for its membership. Tools that you can expect to find, are or will soon be available include:

1. Medical foods comparison charts: The nutrient analysis of medical foods has been updated as of September 2008. The data has been reviewed and approved by the medical teams of the respective medical foods’ manufacturer. Contact information is also provided if you should have questions beyond that provided by the data.

2. Nutritional care plans: Adaptation of the ADA’s recommended nutrition care plan process for use in documentation of the long term and ongoing care plans for individuals with inborn errors of metabolism is being included as an instructional module. The introduction includes a number of frequently asked questions and answers. There will be a series of case studies posted, that will be used to illustrate the implementation of the process.

3. New research: A team of metabolic dietitians has volunteered to review references using PubMed to highlight those of particular interest to GMDI members. The list will be updated every month and references sorted by disorder type.

4. Nutritional guidelines for disorders identified through tandem mass spectrometry NBS:
Evidence- and consensus-based guidelines are being developed to assist metabolic dietitians in the management of infants, children and adults with inborn errors of metabolism treated through dietary intervention. This is a cooperative project between Region 3 Newborn Screening Collaborative and GMDI.

If you would like to volunteer time to participate in any of these projects, or if you would like to contribute clinical pearls, please send an e-mail to professionalpractice@gmdi.org.
